West Nile virus has been detected in 54 / 58 California Counties in 2006.

Human Cases
  • 276 human cases from 36 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2006.
  • There have been seven WNV-related fatalities reported in California from Butte (2), Contra Costa (2), Fresno (1), Riverside (1), and Shasta (1) counties in 2006.
Horses*
  • 58 horses from 23 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2006.
Dead Birds
  • 1,446 dead birds from 53 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2006.
Mosquito Samples**
  • 832 mosquito samples from 34 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2006.
Sentinel Chickens
  • 640 sentinel chickens from 29 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2006.
Squirrels
  • 32 squirrels from 9 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2006.
